Frequently Asked Questions
How much will I save on my utility bills?
Solar thermal systems can provide up to 70% of a households annual domestic hot water requirements and reduce your carbon footprint by up to 25%
Another saving is that a solar thermal system will give a return on its investment unlike a traditional fossil fuel system!
Solar heating does not work properly in the UK?
There is a common misconception that solar heating only works on hot sunny days. Solar technology works all year round and is able to provide a high percentage of your yearly hot water demands. Solar collectors work even if it's freezing cold, all they need is some sunlight and we get enough of that, even on a cloudy day.
Does the system become redundant over the winter months?
No, though the solar radiation levels are not as high over the winter months the system will still pre heat your water. Your main boiler will either not need to run because the water is up to the required temperature or will boost the already heated water to around 60 degrees centigrade. Either way you are saving cost & emissions as your boiler is not having to be worked as hard.
What happens to my boiler?
A solar system works alongside your existing hot water solution. Your boiler will work less to heat your water in winter and little or not at all during the summer.
What about reliability?
The Solar system only has one moving part and that is a standard heating system pump. The pump is generally run at its slowest speed so there is very little to go wrong.
Solar heating systems are too expensive?
